Three Rivers residents will be consulted as to whether they think the district council has enough, or too many councillors.

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England is asking people how many councillors they think should represent Three Rivers District Council in the future.

As well as a six-week public consultation, the commission will later consider changes to the number, names and boundaries of the council’s wards.

During the consultation the commission will be asking people in Three Rivers whether they think 39 is the right number of councillors for Three Rivers.

Max Caller, chairman of the commission, said: "This is your chance to shape your council for the future.

"If you don’t agree that Three Rivers should be represented by 39 councillors, we’d like you to tell us your alternative and why you think there should be more - or fewer - members of the council in the future." The current phase of consultation closes on September 3 and once the evidence has been considered it will be published in October.

The final draft recommendations for Three Rivers' new pattern of wards will come out in April 2013, followed by another 12-week consultation.

Final recommendations are due to be published in October 2013, and the new electoral arrangements will come into effect for the council elections in 2014.
