A hopeful table tennis paralympian from Oxhey was among those who carried the Olympic flame at the weekend.

Jack Pegram, 20, was delighted to be selected as a torchbearer for the London 2012 games.

Despite being restricted to a wheelchair, Jack is at the top of his game in table tennis and plays for Great Britain's Paralympic table tennis development squad.

He was nominated by Sport England and The English Federation of Disability Sport to carry the torch through Bexley in Greater London on Sunday (July 22).

Jack, who lives in Raglan Gardens, explained his delight at being picked to carry the flame.

He said: "I am greatly honoured and it is really nice to know your work is being recognised.

"It was an unbelievable and fantastic experience. I am really pleased to be part of something that will go down in history.

"It is a once in a lifetime experience, that I will never get the chance to do again. " As well as keeping up table tennis, Jack is in his third year at Brunel University where he is studying Sports Science.

He hopes to become a sports teacher.

On top of this, he has volunteered 300 hours of his time to the community by helping young people in sport and has a level 1 coaching badge.

Jack said: "I get a great enjoyment out of teaching and helping people in sports. "It is my way of giving something back to the community and it is great to be responsible for improving other people’s sports ability.

"My heart is in sport."

The budding athlete became interested in table tennis after he took part in the National Junior Games at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and hasn’t looked back.

He now treasures the olympic torch at home.

Jacks mum, Jill Pegram said: "Jack had a brilliant time and it was such a good feeling to see him carry the torch.

"We were really proud of Jack, as we are always proud of him."
