A Watford couple celebrated a momentous 70 years of marriage with children from Parkgate Junior School .

Joyce and Albert Oakey celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary at Horwood Court "10 to 3 club" which is run by Age UK Hertfordshire in north Watford.

Mr Oakey served in the Navy between 1940 and 1946, and the couple bought the North Approach home they live in now in 1947.

The pair were married in Christ Church in St Albans Road in 1942, in their early twenties, and today are both 91-years-old.

The printers compositor said: "Thing have changed an awful lot, the A405 outside out house was only a small road and the rest was just fields."

Mrs Oakey, a comptomer operator, said: "It rained in the morning, and we had the reception in the Scout Hall in Leggatts Way.

"The neighbours all saved up their food coupons so we could have an ox tongue and a ham, and my father grew all the vegetables for the salad.

"We've always got on well, we don't like arguments so if we start to argue we stop and walk away."

The couple visited the club for their big anniversary on Wednesday and joined in the celebrations by helping the club members make wedding favours.

The children gave Joyce and Albert hand made anniversary cards each containing a personal message from the children.

Joyce and Albert, who have always loved dancing, enjoyed a dance before being presented with a basket of flowers and an anniversary cake.

As they cut the cake they were toasted with a glass of wine by fellow club members, staff and volunteers.

When asked what the secret of a happy marriage was, Joyce said "We never argue and early on in our marriage we both agreed that if we had a difference of opinion we would change the subject and not dwell on it."

Mr and Mrs Joyce have twins called Pamela and Geoffrey, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
