A woodland area of Bricket Wood has received an award that recognises high quality green spaces across the UK.

Hanstead Wood, which is just off Smug Oak Lane, impressed judges from the Green Flag due to its wild flower area and the management of animal habitats.

Mike Carter, the chairman of Friends of Hanstead Wood, said: "We are delighted to accept this award on behalf of many of the volunteers who have given their time and effort for the benefit of the community of Bricket Wood."

This is the third consecutive year that the wood has been given the award.

Paul Todd, manager of the Green Flag scheme, said: "A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the achievement of all those whose hard work and dedication has helped create these fantastic places for us all to enjoy."

The award was set up in 1996 to recognise some of the best open spaces in the UK.

This year 1,288 parks and green spaces have received the flag.
