A South Oxhey man with a passion for the Olympics has been moved to song before the official start of the games this Friday.

Bela Buchmann, from Hayling Road, composed "You Don't Have to be a Londoner" in order to promote the games and tourism.

The 65-year-old retired science, maths and geography teacher has been writing songs for more than 20 years.

He has recorded a CD of 20 original tracks including a song for the Royal Wedding, and one inspired by Watford FC called "Don't Stir Up The Hornet's Nest".

He said: "The song "You don't have to be a Londoner" was inspired by the Olympic Games being held in London and also as a step on from the old song "Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner".

"I hope my lyrics promote both the games and London for tourism.

"I also hope somebody out there can find and interest in my musical compositions so I can continue with this type of work during my retirement."

Mr Buchmann featured in the Watford Observer in 2000 when one of his compositions, "Happy Birthday To You Dear Jesus" won first prize in a radio competition.

The song was also televised in Mr Buchmann's native Hungary, performed by the choir of a school he was teaching in.

In his earlier life Mr Buchmann said he was responsible for introducing the international GCSE examinations to eastern Europe, following the breakdown of communism.

The lyrics:

The time is here to make your plan
To see the greatest show
Every nation every clan
You know the way to go
The strength the speed the stamina
Courage, spirit, soul and heart,
The aim to claim Victoria
Is there right from the start.

On every street a wanderer
Walks along it up or downstairs
You don't have to be a Londoner
To love dear old London town

The court the pitch the track the field
The gym the pool the ring
Olympic record breakers yield
To make you cheer and sing
Achievements in the stadium
Silver bronze or even gold
Lead to standing on the podium
So the story can be told

On every street a wanderer
Walks along it up or downstairs
You don't have to be a Londoner
To love dear old London town
