A bus company has agreed to pay for repairs to the green in Croxley Green after a bus became stuck on the grass, and had to be dug out.

The Arriva vehicle became stuck on the grass near the Coach and Horses pub, blocking the road, at about 3pm on Friday.

The driver had missed the turn into New Road and was using the small road near the pub to turn the bus around.

Linsey Frostick, Arriva representative, said: “The driver misjudged the situation and the bus got stuck in the mud. Our engineers attended the scene and recovered the vehicle.

“We are more than willing to cover the cost of any repairs to the grass verge as a result of this incident and we apologise to any customer who was inconvenienced as a result.”

Several people contacted the Watford Observer, some sending in pictures of the ensuing traffic chaos which followed.

William Coppitters was walking home from Rickmansworth school when he saw the bus, and managed to take several pictures of the effort to move it off the green.

He said: “I saw a double decker bus on top of grass outside the pub and it was blocking half of the road and the whole of the pub road.

“I saw the people destroying the green by digging up the grass and mud around the bus wheels attempting to get the bus unstuck. This went on for about an hour or so.”

Other pictures were sent in by Twitter and email by Charlotte Mackie and Steph Yates.

Bruce Crick from Croxley Green said: “I saw it there at about 2.45pm when I drove past, and it had gone when I returned at 4.30pm.

“It was parked outside Coach and Horses pub near the road, partly on the green and occupying part of the road.

“A lot of grass and resulting mud was churned up - I trust Arriva will pay up for damage and repairs to the green?”
