The first meeting of Agnostics Anonymous has proved a resounding success, according to organisers.
The group, which sought to discuss “life, the universe and everything”, met yesterday evening at The Swan pub in College Road, Abbots Langley.
About 15 people gathered for the discussion, led by Reverend Gill Hulme and Reverend John Churcher, from Permission to Speak.
Reverend Hulme, who oversees Methodist churches in Abbots Langley, Kings Langley and Croxley Green, said: “We had a really good evening, with no sandals or tambourines in evidence.
“In fact the majority of those attending happened to be scientists or had a science background, and we had an excellent wide ranging discussion which took in evolution, historical accuracy of miracles, the nature of belief, faith and metaphor.
“I don't think the atheists, agnostics, or believers changed their opinions, but arguments were aired in a polite and constructive way.
“The idea behind the meeting was not to 'proselytise the regulars', but to have an open and honest discussion – so our aim was achieved.”
The group will continue to meet every fourth Thursday of the month at The Swan pub, College Road, Abbots Langley, from 8.30pm.
