Scouts in Bushey have won a district chess competition and hosted a cook-off during a weekend of activities.
Members of the 18th Bushey and Oxhey unit were crowned chess champions ahead of 40 Cubs and Scouts at the tournament held in St Mary’s Church, in Watford, on Saturday. District Scout leader Toby Stromberg said: “It was a close-run competition and I congratulate everyone who took part. I was pleased to see the young people exercising their brains and Scouts young and old taking the opportunity to support their group.”
On Sunday, the group hosted three Scout groups and one Guides unit at their headquarters in Little Bushey Lane.
The teenage contestants took on the challenge of cooking a three-course Jubilee-themed meal.
Michael Duffy, landlord of The Three Crowns Pub, in High Road, and a professional chef both judged the competition, naming the hosts as champions.
Scout leader Christine Wright said: “The hall was very smoky but in the true spirit of Scouting, all the weekend’s participants worked with each other, did their best and had fun. The teams worked hard to develop imaginative and tasty menus and the competition was fierce.
The group will now progress to the county round of the competition.
