Two Conservative politicians in Hertsmere will be given more cash to cover their expenses after the majority of councillors voted in favour of the move last night.
Councillors Hannah David (Conservative, Borehamwood Hillside) and Harvey Cohen (Conservative, Borehamwood Brookmeadow) will each receive about a 30 per cent rise in their allowances.
Despite an attempted revolt by members of the opposition Labour group and one Tory member, the controversial proposals were passed at the full council meeting.
Councillor David, chairman of the planning committee, can now claim £4,976 per year, while Councillor Cohen, chairman of the overview and performance committee, is entitled to £6,634.
Labour representative Councillor Di Hoeksma (Borehamwood, Cowley Hill) said the proposal could not be justified in a time of austerity when Hertsmere residents were having to make cuts to their own personal spending.
The rise was recommended by the Independent Remuneration Panel as a reflection of the rise in costs chairmen are incurring in carrying out their roles.
