A record number of Christmas trees were taken to be shredded and recycled by residents in Hertsmere this year.
A total of 179 festive trees were taken to car parks in Bushey, Radlett, Potters Bar and Borehamwood during council-run sessions this month, the highest number since the scheme began five years ago.
After shredding, what’s left of the trees is mixed with other materials to create mulch, which is spread on flower beds across the borough to keep weeds down and retain moisture in the ground.
Of the recycled trees, 48 were shredded in Bushey and 63 in Radlett.
