Former West Herts College Principal Liz Rushton was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s New Years Honours list.
During her six years as principal Mrs Rushton steered the college through one of the most successful periods which included the opening of the new campus in Watford, and the construction of new facilities in Kings Langley.
She also oversaw two successive improvements in Ofsted reports, including recognition as "Outstanding" in 2010.
Prior to taking up her role at West Herts College Mrs Rushton spent 18 years at South Essex College.
Mrs Rushton, who continues to be involved in further education as a governor of her local college in Sussex, said: “This is an honour and a thrill. I am passionately committed to further education and value greatly the role local colleges can play in their local communities.
"It was a privilege to be West Herts College principal for six years, leading a dedicated team of professionals that transformed the college, culminating in the opening of a first-rate, new campus and recognition as Outstanding from Ofsted in 2010.
“None of this would have been possible without the support and expertise of a strong board of governors, a dedicated college leadership group and a highly committed team of staff right across West Herts College."
West Herts College Principal and Chief Executive Gill Worgan said: “Everyone at West Herts College is delighted for Liz. It is wonderful that people who have dedicated their professional lives to further education are honoured for their exceptional service.”
