Organisers of a charity fun run in Radlett are hoping to boost its fundraising credentials by encouraging participants to gather sponsorship for the first time.
The Five Fields Run, in its fifth year, is organised by the Radlett Rotary Club and has raised more than £4,000 in entry fees since its inception.
Costs are met by accountants Nagler Simmons, which sponsors the event, with all proceeds distributed among various Rotary Club charities.
This year though, organisers have broken with tradition by encouraging runners also to raise money for Hertfordshire-based charity Crohn’s and Colitis UK.
The organisation supports people who are affected by inflammatory bowel conditions and also funds research into the illnesses.
Organiser Simon Pyzer, of the Rotary Club, said: “It is hard work starting these events up but now we have got it going we would be throwing away an opportunity if we didn’t encourage sponsorship.
“If all of the runners each raised £20 we would be looking at a few thousand pounds. The event has got bigger and bigger each year and I’m hoping the sponsorship aspect will raise its profile and help us attract even more runners.
“We chose the charity because it works locally and nationally and we can be sure the money is going to a good cause.”
The chance to be the nominated charity at the run, which attracted 160 people last year, is a first for Crohn’s and Colitis UK and Chief Executive Richard Driscoll said he was delighted with the opportunity.
Mr Pyzer added: “We’re looking forward to it. The most important aspects for me are that this is a community event and one that raises a lot of dosh for some very worthwhile charities.”
The 2012 run will take place on the morning of Monday, June 4 at Tabard Rugby Club in Radlett.
