New confusing road marking have made a busy roundabout between Watford and Bushey more dangerous, according to angry motorists.
Drivers have been left stumped by the painted arrows which appeared at the roundabout between the A41 North Western Avenue and Hartspring Lane.
The markings, which appeared before Christmas, are four consecutive arrows covering in each of the two lanes leading up to the junction on Harspring Road, by the Toby Carvery.
In the left hand lane the first arrow indicates drivers should go straight on before the next one shows a left only sign.
The right lane has a right only arrow first, followed by a right and straight-on one.
Stefanio Whittall, who crosses the roundabout regularly to visit his parents in Bushey, said the new system had left drivers trying to go straight across nonplussed, especially those new to the roundabout.
“A lot of people arriving at the roundabout who don’t know it are getting into the wrong lanes,” he said “If you are going straight across you get confused about which lane you are meant to be in.
“When you get there you have to keep an eye on your mirrors and see whether everyone else is going on the outside or inside of you so you don’t get cut up.”
Mr Whittall, an IT worker, said he wanted to see the markings redone as the confusion made accidents more likely.
He added: “It will definitely increase the chance to accidents.
“Some when people go straight across from the left lane they try to cut across and you have to slam on the brakes.”
Hertfordshire County Council, which oversees the area’s roads, said it was looking into the matter.
The county councillor for the area, Bushey North Conservative, Steve O'Brien, said he was yet to receive any complaints about the roundabout, but would raise the issues with highways department.
Councillor O’Brien added he would not be able to fund any repainting of the markings from the new individual highways funds councillors have recently been given control over as he had already allocated all his grants.
