West Herts College, in Watford, is to join the campaign for better access to films for people with autism by hosting a sensory friendly film screening at 10.30am on Saturday, January 28.
Run in partnership with leading social care support provider Dimensions, alterations will be made to the theatre environment to make it more inclusive for people with sensory differences.
The event is for anyone who might benefit from the subtle differences made to the auditorium. Lights will be left on low, the sound will be turned down and people can move around the theatre and make noise as they choose.
The college decided to start their own autism friendly film event following the growing partnership between Dimensions and cinema chain Odeon.
More than 80 cinemas already take part in the events across the UK and Ireland.
Lisa Hopkins, Dimensions Autism Lead said: “West Herts College got in touch with us after hearing about the work we were doing to improve cinema access.
“They wanted to do something similar for their students and people in their local community.
“This is a great example of what can be achieved when people work in partnership and we are very happy to be able to offer our expertise to help West Herts put on this event.”
Gill Short, Head of School of Foundation Studies at West Herts College said: “The college provides education for many young people with autism and learning difficulties.
“The autism friendly screening is a fantastic extension of what we do and a great opportunity for more people to make the most of our wonderful facilities.”
