Parents will have the opportunity to share their views and opinions of the school admissions system in a new consultation.
The main proposal to be discussed is the possibility of increasing the number of school preferences from three to four, ready for the 2013 admissions.
Many of the surrounding counties allow parents to list more than three schools in their preference list, which has led to the belief that a child living in a neighbouring authority may have a greater chance of getting into a preferred school in Hertfordshire.
Hertfordshire County Council, which is holding the consultation, believes that increasing the number will reduce perceived unfairness by allowing parents to include a safety net option.
Frances Button, cabinet member for education and skills, said: “I hope as many people as possible will respond to this consultation as we really want hear what they think.
“Admission arrangements impact upon all children and it is very important that the views of all communities are taken into account.
“Some community groups, schools and parents may not agree with some of the areas being consulted upon for 2013 and I would invite all to respond. All views will be taken into consideration before arrangements are finalised.”
The council is also seeking opinions on a range of other topics including the rule to prioritise children of school staff and the treatment of twins in the admission system. For more information on the consultation, which will run until February 29, visit www.hertsdirect/org/admissions2013.
