ANGRY villagers demonstrated against plans to build a huge railfreight depot on Green Belt land just north-east of Watford on Friday morning.
Opponents gathered in Park Street to ensure St Albans District Council, which will be deciding on the controversial planning application in November, is in no doubt over the strength oflocal feeling.
They fear the goods terminal, which is proposed on the former Radlett Aerodrome between Park Street and London Colney, will bring thousands of heavy lorries onto already congested roads such as the A414 North Orbital.
Other objections include noise, light pollution and the loss of rural land.
Helioslough, the consortium behind the ambitious scheme, argues it is essential to get freight off the wider road network.
The Government has already indicated it needs major goods terminals in south-east England, and backers say the location, juxtaposed between the M1 and M25 motorways and the Midland Main Line railway, is ideal.
The council's decision is likely to be merely the first skirmish of a protracted planning war.
