Five people were arrested after football fans ran onto the pitch after Watford FC’s final home game of the season.

Visitors QPR beat the Hornets 2-0 on Saturday to secure promotion to the Premier League, prompting hundreds of fans to leave their seats and join the players on the pitch.

Police officers mounted on horses were called in to help disperse those on the pitch.

Watford supporters have criticised the club’s handling of the fixture, complaining about the number of away fans sitting with them, which led club officials to the release of a lengthy statement on Sunday.

Hertfordshire Police said between 120 and 150 QPR fans invaded the pitch at the final whistle.

A statement said: “Due to the high volume of fans in a small space, mounted officers took to the pitch to disperse the crowd.

“This action was quickly taken to avoid people being injured and to prevent disorder.

“As a result of the incident, five people have been arrested on a range of offences including pitch invasion and public order offences. Enquiries to identify other people responsible are underway.

“Hertfordshire Constabulary’s policing of events such as a football matches is proportionate and fair, so people can enjoy themselves safely, however, officers will always have to act to prevent injury to the public or officers, and to maintain public order.”
