A student from Croxley Green is running a half marathon to help raise money for Watford Mencap, after volunteering with the charity and seeing its work first hand.
Amy Crawford, 21, will complete the 13.1 mile Great West Run, held where she studies in Exeter on Sunday.
The Classical Studies and English student said: “I had a lot of work on at uni I so I only began training for the run three weeks ago.
“I play a lot of team and racket sports and I've combined running and swimming to allow my muscles to recover.
“I'm quite nervous as the route is rather hilly, but I have completed my final training run of eleven miles now so I'm looking forward to completing the real thing, I am determined to enjoy the race.”
The former Watford Girls Grammar School student, who taught swimming at Watford Swimming Club, and played Waterpolo for the town's team, is hoping to cross the line in two hours 30 minutes.
Ms Crawford was inspired to raise money for Watford Mencap after volunteering with the charity and seeing the work it does with people with learning disabilities in south west Hertfordshire.
She added: “I've been volunteering at the "Leisure Together" sessions, which provide an opportunity to take part in sport and activities in a safe and sociable environment.
“I have seen the benefits of the charity's work first hand and would love to contribute further. Watford Mencap do lots of vital work in the local community with people with learning disabilities and have recently experienced more funding cuts so I would love to be able to contribute.”
