On Sunday 17th of April, three Watford Mencap supporters took to the streets of London, to take part in the London Marathon 2011. Bernie Byers, John Whittle and Jamie Fisher joined over 36,000 runners to take on the 26.2 mile challenge and raise money for Watford Mencap.

Bernie Byers, 53, completed the race in 5 hours and 26 minutes. Bernie is no stranger to a challenge, having completed a half marathon in 2010 for Watford Mencap. His motivation behind the fundraising is his sister Patsy, who sadly passed away in 2009. Patsy had Downs Syndrome and Bernie is very aware of the services and support that Watford Mencap offer. Bernie has currently raised almost £1500 to support Watford Mencap.

Bernie explained ‘The whole day was filled with a sea of emotions, from being bright and sharp at the start to not quite knowing how I was going to get through the last 5 miles. This is by far the toughest challenge I have ever taken on. The great sense of achievement crossing that finish line was immense. I hope the sponsorship can help bring a big smile to someone that really needs the help or a family that need a break.’

John Whittle’s sister, Sarah, has a learning disability and has been using Watford Mencap’s services for many years. John has been supporting both national Mencap and Watford Mencap in his fundraising effort and has so far raised over £1600. John completed the race in 5 hours and 28 minutes.

John commented ‘I was really ill 2weeks before so getting round in one piece was an amazing effort, it was so hard but worth it. I will definitely run in another marathon’

Jamie Fisher ran the race in memory of his brother Martin. Martin helped out at Watford Mencap Children’s Centre 10 years ago and was a valued member of the volunteer team. A marathon run is nothing new to Jamie, who completed the Florence Marathon in 2009 in just less than 3 hours. Jamie completed Sundays race in a fantastic 3 hours 28 minutes and has so far managed to raise over £1850 for the Watford Mencap Children’s Centre.

All money raised from the three marathon runners will go towards supporting and improving Watford Mencap’s services. Watford Mencap supports over 500 people with a learning disability in South West Herts.

You can still sponsor the three runners and support Watford Mencap.
