An annual contest to find Hertfordshire's young heroes is now open for entries.
The “Citygate Young People of the Year award” (YOPEY) is a contest set up to highlight the tireless work of young people across the county.
Now in its seventh year, the contest offers £2,000 worth of prize money for winning entrants.
Nominees for the award can include young carers, fundraisers, mentors, youth club organisers, and individuals triumphing over adversity.
The contest was created by former national newspaper journalist Tony Gearing, to give younger generations a fairer image, and encourage young people to give to the community.
Mr Gearing said: “The only requirement is that the entry is aged 10-25, lives, works or studies in Hertfordshire, and gives to others in one way or another.”
The contest comes with endorsement from both the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition.
David Cameron said: “It struck me that their common trait was their own determination; their desire to succeed; and their resolve to make a difference.”
Ed Miliband said: “YOPEY gives a platform to young positive role models and was building a better, more engaged, and more civic society.”
“For too long, too many young are falsely portrayed in some sections of our society.”
This year the winner will take home £800, with £400 for second place and £200 for third. Prizewinners will keep half the money and give the half away.
