Motorists travelling south on the M1 have faced major delays this morning due to lane closures put in place following a fire last week.

Early on Friday, April 15 a massive blaze broke out at a scrapyard under the motorway bridge near Mill Hill Broadway.

The motorway was closed between junctions 1 and 4 (Edgware). The entry sliproad from junction 5 (Watford) was also closed on Friday as queues continued to build up as far as junction 6 (St Albans/Bricket Wood).

Although two lanes were reopened on the northbound carriageway yesterday, all lanes south are still closed.

The Highways Agency has said investigations continue on the bridge support and the lanes will remain closed until it is safe to reopen.

Motorists have again faced delays this morning with congestion stretching past Watford to junction 6 (St Albans/Bricket Wood).

There is currently a 1.5 mile queue on the approach to the closure and drivers are being urged to take alternative routes.
