Watford Mencap looked back on its 60 years combating prejudice during a coffee morning in Rickmansworth.
The charity was founded in 1951 when most people with a learning disability were placed, often soon after birth, in long stay institutions.
The event - one of several being held to celebrate its diamond jubilee year - took place in The Old Town Hall, Rickmansworth, and reunited parents and carers who have been involved with the organisation over the years.
Jane Whitehead, volunteer, said: “Watford Mencap has not only developed alongside the changes in the public’s attitude towards people with a learning disability, but also alongside fundamental changes in how charity work is organised.”
Alf Loose and Monica Griffin, both long-term supporters of the charity, organised the event. Janet Speed and Angela Pickford, residents of Watford Mencap homes, served drinks and baked cakes.
