A 120-year-old England football shirt once owned and worn by Watford's first manager, John Goodall, has sold for £4,200 at auction.
Two of Goodall's England caps, from the 1890s, also fetched a total of £5,800 at the same sale today (Monday).
The white, woollen button-up shirt, one of the earliest England shirts ever to be offered at auction, is believed to be Goodall's England debut shirt worn in the match against Scotland at Hampden Park on March 17, 1888.
Goodall scored one of the goals in England's 5-0 win. It had been expected to sell for between £3,000 and £4,000.
Fifteen years later, in 1903, Goodall became Watford's first manager and was the Hornets' boss until 1910.
At the sale at Graham Budd Auctions at Sotheby's in London, Goodall's purple England cap sold for £2,600 (it's pre-sale estimate was £1,000 to £1,500), while his white England cap sold for £3,300 (estimate £800 to £1,200).
Goodall's programme from the Football Association's 75th anniversary banquet on October 26,1938, signed by Goodall and 24 other England internationals, also sold for £700.
