A Kings Langley mother-of-three has been given a taste of celebrity after appearing on and winning a popular television show.
Kelly Hatt, 35, of Alexandra Road, was one of three Hertfordshire residents to feature on Channel 4’s Come Dine With Me on Friday evening.
The show sees four amateur chefs each throw a dinner party and show off their culinary and hosting skills.
Contestants each score how their host has performed on the evening, with a £1,000 cash prize at stake.
Bubbly Ms Hatt, formerly from Essex, explained: “Come Dine With Me has to be one of my favourite shows, I didn’t hesitate in entering.
“My friends and family have always said I’m a great host and a good cook, so I thought I’ve got nothing to lose, I may as well go for it and see what happens.”
Ms Hatt, touted by the show as a former “ladette” turned “lady”, found herself competing alongside Perry Jones from Harpenden, Amit Koshal from St Albans, and Heath Reid from Aldenham.
She said: “The show asked me what kind of people would be my worst dinner guests.
“I told them three men and someone who was a bit of a ‘geezer’. It came as no surprise then on the first night when I found out that’s exactly who I’d be sharing a dinner table with over the week, it’s what makes great telly.”
A self-confessed foodie, Ms Hatt’s menu consisted of a dill amuse bouche, perfectly puffed up cheese and herb soufflés to start, tender spring lamb with fluffy mash for main, and a sweet lime and tequila crème with ginger and chocolate biscuit for dessert.
Despite dropping her entree before serving it to her guests, the real test of her hosting skills came when contestants Perry Jones and Amit Koshal continued their argument over a bottle wine from the night before.
She said: “‘Rose-gate’ - it all go rather silly and out of hand.
“Perry was cross Amit had run out of Rose on his night and felt the need to bring it up at every opportunity.
"Amit took offence to this and things really came to a head on the final night, Heath’s evening, when they were rallying insults at one another like a game of tennis.”
Besides a few arguments during her evening, her menu and hosting proved a winning combination with her guests, and following intense competition from her rivals through the week, she was crowned winner of the show.
Having already spent the £1,000 on shopping for herself and her family, Ms Hatt said she would recommend entering the show to would-be chefs.
She said: “It wasn’t so much about winning, more showing off my hosting and cooking skills and meeting new people. I couldn’t be a television chef. More the ‘hostess with the mostess’.
“Perry and I have become firm friends and Amit, who works as a dentist, fixed my teeth the other week.
“I wouldn’t do Come Dine With Me Again, it’s hard work, but without doubt, it was one of the best weeks of my life.”
