Religion. A simple, three syllable word. What's all the fuss about? It's a subject that has interested and infuriated many for thousands of years. Some argue that religion helps create love and community and is instrumental in creating peace, where others argue it does the complete opposite and is the sole reason for war and suffering.

A complex subject to tackle in a blog because I found myself saying "Where do I start" and two hours later, I'm saying "For God's sake, I don't know where to start" Bingo!! That's where I'll start...... Why did I say, for God's sake? I'm not religious by any means. I don't pray, I don't go to church, I don't read the bible and why the hell should I.............

Hang on, I went and did again! Why did I say the words "Why the Hell should I?" It was then that I started racking my brain to see what other phrases had crept into my vocabulary without me being conscious of them. Here is a list of phrases I have used since childhood, some of which I still use today.

God Forbid, I Swear to God, It's the Gospel Truth, Goodness Me, By the love of God, Jesus Christ, For Christ's Sake, God Knows, Good Heavens.

To be honest, there are probably more and it really surprises me. I have not had a religious upbringing and my friends, unless they are more secretive than I already suspect, do not promote any particular faith. I've therefore deduced that these phrases have been passed down through the generations and are accepted figure's of speech.

It's been interesting for me to learn that while not religious, I have found myself "Swearing to God" proclaiming that "God Knows" and telling people the "Gospel is true" I'm sure that any minister in the land would be pleased with the work of myself and many other non religious people out there.

Now that we are opening up, let me tell you exactly where I sit in terms of that simple, three syllable word. I am Agnostic. This means that I neither believe or disbelieve the claims of any religious group. The more detailed definition actually goes further by saying that Agnosticism is the view that it is unknown or unknowable, but in truth, I have not conducted my own investigations and so have not yet come to this conclusion. So there I am, sitting right in the middle of that big old fence.

It is because of my position on the fence, that I find myself in a fascinating position this coming Saturday. I currently host a Saturday Morning Radio Show on Watford Hospital Radio and the subject of religion has been interesting me for a little while now. With the Pope visiting Britain, I decided to get into contact with two gentlemen who it is fair to say will have very different views.

Pastor Roy Young, from Garston Community Church and John Dowdle, President of the Watford Area Humanists will be joining me for a lively debate between 9am and 10am this Saturday. If you would like to listen to the show, you can by visiting www.watfordhospitalradio.com and then clicking on the "LISTEN NOW" link. If you would like to get involved, you can email your questions to either of my guests by sending it to andy.leeks@watfordhospitalradio.com
