A teenager who was left paralysed after breaking his neck in a swimming accident in Portugal two years ago inspired 200 members of Fullerians Rugby Club to walk to Wembley Stadium to watch Saracens play Harlequins last season.
And on Saturday the cash raised by the sponsored walk, £8,713, was presented to the youngster by those who helped organise the walk.
Henry Fraser, 18, had a promising rugby career ahead of him when he had the accident which left him with life-changing injuries. A very capable all-round sportsman, he had picked up county and regional rugby honours and was a Fullerians Colt and member of Saracens Academy which is made up of young stars of the future.
But the accident has left him quadriplegic, in need of constant care and support and with huge challenges ahead of him.
The cheque was presented by Fullerians’ Saracens Ambassador and the walk organiser Pat O’Keefe who said that Henry’s courage in adversity had been an inspiration to everyone at the rugby club and that the 12 mile walk to Wembley had grasped their imaginations like no other event he had been involved in.
He said it was probably the single best day he had had during his many years as Saracens Ambassador.
The cheque was presented following a luncheon organised to recognise the efforts of volunteers who have helped the mini and junior section of the club during the past season.
- Fullerians will be making a second charity trek to Wembley for the Heineken Cup match against Leinster on Saturday, October 16.
