Hundreds of dogs strutted their stuff in Croxley Green today as they took part in the village’s first fun dog show.

The pampered pooches, some of whom arrived in fancy dress, completed in a variety of competitions, including the handsomest dog, best veteran and fasted biscuit eater.

The event, organised by Croxley Green Parish Council, was held in Stones Orchard, with all £1 entry fees donated to The Dogs’ Trust.

Council chairman Marion Birch, who hosted the event, said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic. I can’t believe how many people have turned up – I never knew there were so many dogs in the whole village.”

Special guest David Gauke MP brushed aside his canine allergy and lent a hand with the all important judging.

He said: “I am actually allergic to dogs but I am a dog lover and have been really impressed by those on show today.

It shows what a great community spirit there is in Croxley Green that events like this and the Revels are always so well supported.”

Dogs of all shapes and sizes took part in the various categories but it was undoubtedly the biggest that Mr Gauke crowned Handsomest (male) dog: Bruno, a giant two-yearl-old Bernese Mountain Dog weighing in at over 50 kilograms.

Owner Caroline Faulkner explained: “He’s a very big dog but he’s also very friendly and loves everybody. We are all very proud of him.”

Councillor Birch said she had yet to decide whether the event will go ahead next year. Most visitors interviewed by the Watford Observer, however, said it ought to become and annual event.

“Just add a beer tent to it and we’ll have a perfect event,” concluded one.
