In recognition of 20 years' service to a university council, a man from Chorleywood has been awarded an honorary degree.
Rupert Wheeler, of The Clump, received his degree from Buckinghamshire New University at a graduation ceremony at Wycombe Swan Theatre, High Wycombe.
A chartered engineer, Mr Wheeler was born in India at the start of World War Two, and has served on several of the council's committees.
He is a member of Chorleywood and District Horticultural Society, has been involved with the university for more than 20 years and said the honorary award was “a privilege”.
He said: “Supporting Bucks New University in its development has been a most worthwhile and satisfying experience.
“It has been a privilege to be a member of the University Council, which I recommend to anyone fortunate enough to be given the opportunity.”
He was a founder member and director of Merlin Information Systems Ltd, and is also an honorary research fellow at the Institute of Orthopaedics & Musculoskeletal Science, based at the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital Trust site in Stanmore, Middlesex.
Professor Ruth Farwell, vice chancellor, said: “Rupert joins a celebrated group of honorary awardees, chosen in recognition of their outstanding achievements in their fields and because they are an inspiration to our graduating students.”
He was joined by wife Fiona and son Edward for his graduation day.
