ARSONISTS are believed to have been responsible for a fire that raged in a derelict Leavesden pub for more than an hour last Sunday.

Residents called 999 at about 6.30pm, when they saw smoke pouring from the roof of The Hare pub in High Road, Leavesden, although police said it was possible the arsonists entered the building earlier in the day.

It is believed the fire was started in a room at the rear of the pub, which has lain empty for several months.

Seven fire vehicles from crews across the county attended the blaze, and a hydraulic platform was provided in case the fragile building collapsed.

The cause of the fire was recorded as doubtful.

DC Paul Rowley, investigating the incident, said: "Luckily, no one was injured as a result of the fire, as the pub has been closed for a number of months.

However, fire tenders were in attendance and damage was caused to the inside of the building.

"We are very keen to speak to anyone who was in the area either earlier in the day, or at the time of the blaze, who may have seen something suspicious, or anyone who has any information that could help with the inquiry."

Anyone with any information can telephone DC Rowley, at the western area crime unit, on 01923 472490 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

An application was lodged with Watford Borough Council, by MacNeil Ltd, at the beginning of September to demolish the pub and construct a 60-bedroom elderly care home.
