A LOCAL charity has raised almost £5,000 from events over its 15th anniversary weekend.
The Watford New Hope Trust hosted two days of activities in the town centre, including a sponsored abseil.
More than 45 people took the 90ft plunge off the top of The Harlequin shopping centre, including Watford Borough Councillor Alan Burtenshaw.
He said: "It's one of those things you have to do once in your life.
"It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
"The anticipation is everything. When you actually do it, you think what was that all about?
"I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'd do it again."
He was joined by other successful descenders aged between 11 and 70.
There was a minimum sponsorship to take part, however, the charity reports that many participants raised well over this sum.
Other events that took place over the weekend included stalls, live music and an appearance by a Coronation Street actress.
Event co-ordinator, David Gould, who also took part in the abseil, said: "This has been a fantastic day and we are thrilled by the support we have received.
"We look forward to running this event again next year.
"We would like to say a big thank you to all those who have taken part this weekend and helped to bring hope to the homeless."
