MEMBERS of Watford Rugby Club are signing up to take part in the forthcoming Manches Moor Park 10k on Sunday, October 2.
This annual event raised money for the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre (LJMC) at Mount Vernon Hospital which provides support and information services to people affected by cancer.
The members are pledging their support to the centre in memory of Gail Connolly who worked at the club for five years where she was a familiar face serving teas and coffees at their matches as well as other club functions.
Mrs Connolly died of cancer in 2004 following treatment at Mount Vernon Hospital, during which time both she and members of her family received much support from the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre.
Club chairman, Matt Sharpe said: "Gail was a much loved member of the club and we all miss her very much.
"The LJMC provides such a valuable service to the community and we are very pleased to be able to support its work by encouraging our members to take part in the Manches Moor Park 10k."
So far, several members of the club have signed up to take part in the run and they have also signed up their children to take part in the junior runs.
The run, which takes place at Merchant Taylors' School, is unique in being virtually traffic free. After a lap of the playing fields, the route goes through the private Moor Park estate and over Rickmansworth and Moor Park Golf Clubs, before returning to the school grounds.
The 10k race starts at 3pm with the races for younger runners earlier in the day. All runners will receive a medal. There are trophies for the winners in each age category and prizes for the winning teams.
This is the fourth year that this event has been organised and so far it has raised over £55,000 for the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre.
This money has gone towards the provision of the LJMC's services to people affected by cancer, which include a drop-in centre, counselling and complementary therapy services.
Runner numbers are already 25 per cent on last year but you can still enter the events. For more information about the Manches Moor Park 10k or for an entry form, log onto the event website at www.moorpark10k.org.uk or telephone 020 8950 6586.
