PAUL BAILEY and Adam Powell have been rewarded for a try-scoring performance in the A-team on Monday night with a place in the squad for the trip to Worcester tomorrow (Saturday).
Bailey is named on the wing for his first Premiership start in nearly a year after Tevita Vaikona failed a fitness test on his injured heel while Powell, the 18-year-old Academy centre, will take his place on a bench that includes an entire front row an indication that director of rugby feels the match is going to hinge on the bruising battle up front.
Powell, capped at every youth level by England, only joined Saracens from school on a full-time basis this year but he was quickly integrated into the first team during pre-season and has won a place in the squad ahead of Dan Harris after two eye-catching displays in the A team and an impressive showing against Andy Farrell in the probables v possibles game.
"He's an exceptional talent," said Saracens' RFU manager Mike Hynard. "I'm absolutely delighted for him and he is in the side on merit as he has worked so hard in pre-season.
"He is strong, deceptively quick, has got bags of confidence in his own ability and he has a real eye for the gap."
Powell is one of seven players in the side who have graduated through the club's Academy system representing a massive turn-around for a club who have a history of buying expensive imports.
"There are a few young lads coming through and that's how we will build the club," confirmed Diamond. "We are not going to go out and buy flash names as we've got enough of those already. Some sides have to do it but fortunately we don't have to these days."
