THE ring road in Watford could be transformed into a series of two-way streets under radical new plans revealed this week.

The proposals also recommend the removal of the flyover by TJ Hughes department store.

It is hoped the scheme, which forms part of Watford Borough Council's new Community Plan, will ease congestion on the ring road and improve pedestrian and cycling facilities in Watford.

Mayor Dorothy Thornhill said: "Everyone recognises that congestion in Watford is a problem, but we are all divided by what the solution is.

"Some people will say these plans are brave or stupid, but we have got to be able to have a debate about them.

"I think the ring road strangles Watford and anything that breaks that down is a good idea."

The plan to turn the ring road into a series of two-way streets has been included in the new Community Plan, following discussions with local residents.

Consultants have since been working on the final details for the ring road proposals, which they will publish in full later this year. Initial reaction to the proposed development has been positive.

The ring road has been the subject of much debate in recent years, with many residents arguing that the direction of traffic flow should be reversed.

Many also believe the flyover should have been removed years ago Bob Nunn, a local historian, said the flyover built in the early 1970's was partly responsible for killing trade at the top end of the town.

He said: "I put myself in the position of traders there and my heart sinks and cringes about what's happened to the top end of the town.

"No-one thought about the consequences when the flyover was built and its removal is a long time coming."
