A COUPLE from Garston flew to Kigali in Rwanda on Bank Holiday Monday, on the start of an incredble humanitarian trek.
Susan and Kelvin Sawyer have flown out to help repair and replace vital equipment at clinics in the troubled African republic.
Susan, whose parents live in Middle Way, Watford, married Sydney-born Kelvin last December.
She works as an occupational therapist at Hemel Hempstead Hospital and Kelvin works for Adventist Health International, a humanitarian aid organisation closely associated with ADRA (the Adventist Disaster and Relief Agency). Kelvin was based at Stanborough Park in Garston.
The Seventh-day Adventist Church runs hospitals and clinics all over the world, many in developing countries, and that is where the pair will be focussing their efforts.
The work will take them to Africa and India, and early next year to Afghanistan.
Spares will come from Loma Linda Hospital in California, so Kelvin will commute to there as well.
While Kelvin will be repairing buildings, Susan will be trying to arrange rehabilitation programmes for victims of land-mine disasters.
