THOMAS CASTAIGNEDE acknowledged his shock call-up to the France squad this week was testament to Saracens' upturn in fortunes.

The 30-year old French utility back has not played for Les Bleus since being axed after the disappointing tour of Argentina in 2003, but he moved one step closer to a recall after being summoned for a pre-season fitness testing session on Wednesday by Bernard Laporte.

"It's only come about because of the results of the club," said Castaignede. "If I want to achieve that level it will only come by playing well for Saracens. The most important thing is to play well for Saracens."

Castaignede has endured a frosty relationship with Laporte over the last two years and added: "It's like a woman sometimes it's good to take a break from each other.

"I was very surprised but sometimes I was not surprised not to go. If I'm selected again it might mean something and if I'm playing well and Saracens are playing well then why not ?

"The French team is a good thing but with all the support I have had from Saracens I need to achieve something and put a trophy in the office of Mr Wray."
