FILM fans who missed Wilde the first time around - maybe because they bought tickets for Bean by mistake - get a second chance to see one of the best films of 1997 at the Alban Arena next week.
Wilde and its title role star Stephen Fry courted acclaim from all corners when the film went on general release.
A faithful and touching adaption of the biography of Oscar Wilde, the movie was mentioned in the same sentence as the words "academy award" as soon as it hit the world's cinema screens.
Brian Gilbert's film charts the life of one of the literary world's most outrageous talents who, despite his wit and intellect is ruined by a desire to follow his own path regardless of the consequences.
The greatest impression the viewer gets from watching Wilde, is that making the film was a labour of love for Fry.
His portrayal of his hero is predictably stunning, bringing the character to life for those previously unacquainted with the great man's work, while provoking a stream of superlatives from die-hard Wilde fans.
Fry's performance, coupled with a fine supporting cast, makes Wilde a must-see for everyone who demands a bit of mental stimulation from their night at the flicks.
