Simpson leads the recovery
Brondesbury 206-7 dec.
Brentham 92
Grolsch Middlesex County League Division One
Following early shocks with Mark Lowrey and Ian Kidd dismissed with the total on 20, Brondesbury took a firm grip and ran out convincing winners over Brentham. Ten points left them only five behind leaders Finchley, as they continued their powerful quest to retain the title.
An excellent third wicket stand of 92 between Mike Hood (57) and Tommy Simpson (81) triggered the recovery, but a mini-collapse followed to leave them on 116-5.
However, Simpson continued to bat well, and important contributions from Simon Smith (22) and 17-year-old Justin Le Fort (12 not out), on his first-team debut saw Brondesbury through to 206-7 declared.
Brentham were left 57 overs, but rain immediately reduced this to 52. However, poor batting and superb bowling saw Brentham bowled out for 92 in just 37 overs.
As usual, Ricky Fay (3-17, off 12 overs) struck quickly. Sutherland (2-19, off 11 overs) and Edwards (2-26, off 7.2 overs) bowled excellently and Nelson (3-23, off seven overs) cleaned up the tail.
Brondesbury, beaten by Finchley in the final of the Ibex Cup last season, get their chance of revenge following a 50-run win over Barclays Bank. 15-year-old Nick Jones (67) was their star performer.
Brondesbury II 197-4 dec. (E Fowler 114 no), Southgate II 176-7. Teddington III 154-5 dec., Brondesbury III 155-3 (J Jackson 60 no).
