Most of our history has come to us via the words of individual historians.
But in a recently-opened exhibition, to illustrate Radlett and Aldenham in the year 2000, this traditional method of recording history has been abandoned in favour of residents showing how they see life in their parish as we enter a new Millennium.
The Radlett In Your Eyes exhibition, which opened at Radlett Library in Aldenham Avenue on July 1, is made up of written pieces, photographs and other material submitted by organisations and individuals living and working in the Radlett area.
There are photographs showing how aspects of the village looked 100 years ago, compared to now.
There are also contributions from The Radlett Society and Green Belt Association, Radlett Flower Club, The Rotary Club of Radlett, the Radlett and Aldenham Millennium Festival, Christ Church and St John's Church.
A wall chart shows the history of the site of Newberries Primary School, in Newberries Avenue, from 1281; and St John's Nursery has made a model of the Watling Street shops from cardboard boxes.
Exhibition organiser, Hertsmere Borough Council's museums officer Julie Massey, plans to archive the displays as a permanent historical record of the parish.
She said: 'It is not a record by historians, but by societies and individuals.
'It is not as biased, because if you have got one person recording the town they record what they think is important historically.
'If it is done by people you get a range of things that people like, or dislike, about Radlett.'
People are invited to contribute words and pictures to the exhibition, which ends on August 31; and the council has 20 disposable cameras to give to the first 20 people who call the museums department on 020 8207 7519, and are willing to take at least one picture for the exhibition.
