will have smoke

alarms installed

Flats across Dollis Valley in Barnet are to have smoke detectors installed after the Barnet & Potters Bar Times highlighted alarming shortcomings in fire safety last week.

Hundreds of families across the estate will benefit from being included in Barnet Council's ongoing installation programme.

'We have a policy of installing smoke detectors in properties most at risk,' said Councillor Beverley Pearce, Barnet Council's cabinet member for housing. 'I have requested that those affected properties in Dollis Valley are included in the programme.'

Last week the Barnet & Potters Bar Times revealed lives were at risk because simple safeguards were not being maintained. Miatta Dassama was trapped with her five-year-old daughter when arsonists torched the door to their Mill Bridge home on June 13.

The pair fled the smoke-filled flat by breaking through an escape hatch onto an adjoining balcony with the help of neighbours.

Dozens of the hatches, which link fifth-floor balconies, were subsequently found to be locked, jammed or blocked ,, putting hundreds of lives in danger, it emerged.

'We only want another fire and the same thing could happen again,' warned residents' association chairman Mike Judd.

This week council officers wrote to residents warning them to keep their fire escapes clear. Rubbish stored on balconies can be disposed of in skips next week.

Councillor Pearce said other precautions were also in the pipeline. Ongoing exterior decorations would include the replacement of fire escape doors and locks.
