WEST HERTS' golfer David Griffiths helped England to victory in the European Youths Championship, at Kilmarnock Barassie this week.

The 20 year old led the team to a 4-3 quarter final win over Finland in the match-play stage by taking full points from his two matches.

England went on to beat the holders Wales in the semi final and then triumphed in the final by 4-3 against Scotland.

On Saturday, West Herts were chosen by Hertfordshire County to represent the 80 golf clubs of Herts in staging the English Golf Union South Eastern Group Finals.

All the top players from 11 counties competed in six-man teams over two rounds.

The victors were Surrey, whose best player Paul Cassey broke the course record with a superb 65.

Hertfordshire finished in sixth place.

Family rivalry became intense in the Family Fourball Competition at West Herts when the Smithard family could not be separated.

For the first time ever, the first three places were taken by three pairs from the same family, all of whom scored the same total of 40 points.

In third place was Mary Smithard and youngest son Ian, just beaten by Ray and son, Andrew.

However, proudly on top was Ray's younger brother David and son Keith, who were proud winners of the trophy.
