Children from Meryfield School in Borehamwood took a break from their schoolwork recently to enjoy their annual summer fun day.
The day was organised to raise money for new equipment at the school, and the children soon got into the spirit of the event by designing, manning and organising the stalls, which the school's headteacher, Anne Wefley, said were more successful than usual.
Deputy Town Mayor Ernie Butler judged a fancy dress competition for each age group, with six-year-old Becky Gayler winning first prize for her year group wearing a rubbish bin costume, six-year-old Becca Spinks wrapping up as a birthday present and Lydia Calvert dressing as a butterfly.
There was a netball tournament featuring teams of teachers, parents and pupils. The teachers won, but later the children got their revenge, taking part in a 'beat the goalie' contest with two of the school governors and the school caretaker. Hungry parents enjoyed the barbecue that kept serving food all day, and watched as the school choir sang.
Over £1,400 was collected, and now the school has to decide whether to spend the money on a new climbing frame or cooking equipment.
