The latest chapter in the history of education in Borehamwood will come to a sad ending tomorrow, when the closure of Hillside and Hawksmoor schools is completed.
Hillside, which first opened in 1939, shuts tomorrow, while Hawksmoor, launched in 1972, closed its gates yesterday ,, both to make way for the new Hertswood School.
Phil Tompkins, headteacher at Hawksmoor since 1989, was proud the school had provided a lively environment in which pupils were able to achieve to the best of their abilities. 'I want to thank my colleagues, both teaching and non-teaching staff, and the parents who have kept us going during a really difficult time over the past few months,' he said.
Tim Westrip, who has been head of Hillside for the past 13 years, said the school prided itself on supporting its students and offering them arts and sports opportunities.
'I have had some excellent experiences at Hillside and look back with a sense of satisfaction at how many Hillsiders have achieved so much,' he said.
