A GIANT crown made of roses was the stunning centrepiece of the float sent by St Albans' Gardens of the Rose to the Queen Mother's birthday pageant on Wednesday.

More than 1,000 red and white roses were picked in the preparation of the crown that took ten people, working 14-hour days, four days to put together.

The striking creation was surrounded, quite aptly, by Queen Mother roses as it took its place among the other floats invited to join in the birthday celebrations.

The gardens were first invited to take part at the end of last year and preparations have been taking place ever since.

Among those involved in the procession were director general Ken Grapes, who carried the society's standard and Mr Tony Sutton, who drove the float, with daughter Cher. Others invited from the society were president Colin Horner, and his wife Heather, past president Dick Balfour and board member Jean Adams with her grandchildren, Amy and Ben Bruce.

Mrs Adams said: 'The atmosphere was absolutely amazing. There will never be a tribute like this again, we all had the most wonderful time.'

Society secretary Anna Magowan, who was instrumental in co-ordinating the society's efforts said: 'This was our tribute to the Queen Mother as our patron. We are all delighted for her and wish her a very happy birthday.'

The crown has now returned to the gardens where it can be seen by visitors.

The city of St Albans is also looking to play its part in the birthday celebrations with the announcement by Mayor Roma Mills of a new tree sponsorship scheme.

Both residents and businesses are being invited to say 'happy birthday' with the planting of a new tree at a cost of just £50.

Anyone interested in the scheme should contact the council's environmental resource officer, Mr Trevor Brennan, on 01727 819455.
