HEIDAR HELGUSON hit a first-half hat-trick and had two further nettings disallowed as Watford romped to a 6-0 victory at Jewsons South-West League Newquay on Wednesday night.
'To score six is good, no matter what the opposition and Heidar had five shots, finding the net each time but had two disallowed,' said Graham Taylor.
While the opposition did not provide too severe a test and goalkeepers Alec Chamberlain and Chris Day had little to do, it should be taken into account that Watford had undgone an exacting morning's training stint and then had a 40-minute work out against hosts HMS Raleigh in the afternoon.
'This was the first full 90 minutes on the tenth day of pre-season and the players have done extremely well,' said the Watford boss.
'They are really putting us through it at HMS Raleigh and I think, if you speak to the players, it is the hardest pre-season any of them have had.
'This morning we did a hill session in Polperro and anyone who knows that hill will know that the only one you can expect to meet at the top is God. It is an impressive hill.'
Watford played two teams against the non-league side, whose players are unpaid but collect travelling expenses. Taylor did not make any substitutions during play but changed the team at the interval.
Helguson took just seven minutes to get off the mark when he and a defender converged on a goalbound shot from Tommy Smith, who had broken into the inside-right channel. Later Smith declined to claim the goal himself.
Seven minutes later, Lee Johnson fed Helguson who scored past the 16-year-old keeper from the edge of box.
Then, after 26 minutes, Clint Easton put through a defence-splitting crossfield ball and Smith, took his time before picking his spot.
The young striker could have had a hat-trick as well, missing two openings, and Helguson had two goals, albeit correctly, disallowed for offside, but he put the chances away anyway. In addition, Peter Kennedy hit a left-foot shot against the underside of the bar.
Within a minute of netting the third, Watford went 4-0 ahead when Paul Robinson sent over a fine crossfield ball and Helguson completed his hat-trick with avicious right-foot shot from the edge of the box.
When Mooney was brought down, somewhat unnecesssarily by the keeper on the hour, he blasted the spot-kick home centrally as the Newquay man dived to one side.
A great ball from David Pepertuini enabled Michel Ngonge to sprint through and finish well for the sixth.
WATFORD (first half): Chamberlain; Ward, Page, Palmer; Cox, L Johnson, Easton, Robinson; Helguson, Smith, Foley.
(Second half): Day; Gibbs Langston, Ward; Cox, Bakalli, Palmer, Perpetuini; Mooney, Ngonge, Kennedy.
