We should like to bring to all your readers attention the neglect of country lanes in the Shenley/Ridge area, specifically Mimms Lane, Earls Lane and Packhorse Lane ? these are all narrow lanes with passing places, used extensively by young horse riders, walkers, cyclists and dog owners.

The lanes have no speed limit and drivers are using them as a rat run, going at speeds that represent a danger to all other users.

The hedges on the side of the lanes have been eroded by vehicles passing each other and encroaching onto the banks. Hertsmere Borough Council's highways department has not filled in these encroachments.

As the lanes pass through the Green Belt, and an especially beautiful part of the countryside, it is time that the council made an effort to preserve some of the last pretty spots in close proximity to Shenley and Borehamwood.

The banks of these lanes should be restored.

A speed limit of 20 mph. should be imposed and notices warning heavy vehicles to refrain from using these lanes should be erected.

The Highways department says that it has no money and the police say they cannot enforce speed limits.

Are we to see the heritage to future generations being destroyed by apathy and the inaction of our elected representatives?

Helen and David Lane,

Earl Lane, Ridge.
