A six-year old girl's imagination has played a part in the regeneration of a forgotten corner of Elstree.

Composers Park, near Sullivan Way, was named by Marrin Shillingford, a pupil at St Nicholas School.

Until a year ago it was a patch of wasteland dotted with rubbish left behind by fly-tippers.

Now the 6.5 hectare piece of land boasts 2,000 trees, which were planted by nearby schoolchildren and residents, and donated by a security company.

There is a new play area with equipment for children of all ages and most of the rubbish has been cleared away, thanks to people living nearby who were happy to lend a hand.

Marrin's idea to call the site Composers Park fitted in with the street names around the park ,, the Musicians Estate is just along the road.

Her idea was chosen from suggestions by all 200 children at her school, and at a recent unveiling ceremony she was given an artist's box set as a prize.

'We ran the competition to get local people interested in the park. Before we took over it was just a neglected piece of land,' said David Clarke, from Hertsmere Borough Council's landscaping department.
