The consequences of the county council's decision to close Brook House residential home are now being experienced in Borehamwood.

Last month's closure forced Borehamwood's day centre, which had operated at the home, to move to Bushey until a site for a new building could be found.

But it appears the new arrangement has proved so unpopular with elderly people who attend the centre that questions have been asked about its future.

Borough councillors had agreed for the facility to remain in Bushey until March next year, but the strength of public opinion brought about a change in heart.

However, although Hertsmere Borough Council might be able to find it a temporary home, the search for a site for a permanent centre is likely to take some time.

Two years ago a decision was taken to build a new centre at Clarendon Road, but that proposal proved unworkable and no other suitable site has been identified since.

The county council is faced with a similar problem in trying to find an appropriate site in Borehamwood on which to build the residential accommodation for the elderly it has promised.

We hear it has been suggested that the new residential accommodation and the day centre could be incorporated into the same new development.

If that is the case, perhaps the most logical solution would be for the county and borough to team up to build a new facility where this saga first began: Brook House.
