MOTORISTS are being warned of severe traffic delays in St Albans when long-awaited work starts at the Ancient Briton accident blackspot.

Alterations to change phasing of traffic signals at the junction of Harpenden Road with Beech Road and Batchwood Drive, will begin on Monday.

Work is expected to last four weeks and drivers are being warned to expect long delays, especially at peak periods.

Earlier this year Hertfordshire County Council asked for public comment on two alternative improvement schemes for the junction - the worst accident blackspot in St Albans.

Both plans were designed to reduce accidents and introduce a full pedestrian green man phase into the traffic light sequence.

The preferred option, agreed by the county council's development control committee in May, will give both Beech Road and Batchwood Drive their own green sequence while Harpenden Road north and southbound will continue as they are.

There will be temporary 24-hour traffic controls while work is carried out and advance warning boards are being displayed on all approaches to the area. As part of the work, a short section of Beech Road is being resurfaced.
