bosses in

planning rift

Health club bosses have hit back at claims their exclusive new Friern Barnet club could be in breach of planning regulations.

Fitness company Esporta is set to open a club with pool, sauna, bar and gym at the former Friern Hospital in Princess Park Manor on October 1.

But Barnet councillor Paul Rogers says Esporta only has permission for a private club for residents of the Manor, which has been divided into luxury flats. He is concerned about recent advertising which said the club would be open to the general public for membership.

'Perhaps they are just testing the water, but it seems to me they have done things the wrong way round, bearing in mind there has been no planning application for wider membership lodged with the council,' he said.

Mr Rogers says he is not against the club, which is near where he lives in Friern Barnet. 'If there was an application made in the future, it would be viewed on its merits.'

An Esporta spokesman said negotiations were under way with the council and the club would open as scheduled. 'It has been agreed that the Esporta club will trade within the scope of the planning permission.

'Any planning issues have now been resolved and we look forward to working in partnership with the council to ensure the long term viable use of this historic building.'

But Barnet planning officials, who could take action against the club if it breaches its planning agreement, said the issue had yet to be resolved. 'We are still considering the matter and are seeking legal advice,' a spokesman said.
