A bid to squeeze £5million out of the GLA's budget for transport in the borough has been put forward by Barnet Council.
An interim transport plan has been drawn up for the next five years which lays out the council's transport strategy and targets the areas that need improvement. The plan will be used as the basis of a bid for funding from the GLA's budget for 2001/2002. The council says it is already spending £5m on road and pavement repairs this year and is pitching for an equal sum from the London authority.
Cllr Helen Gordon said the plan put an emphasis on greener transport. 'Of course, the car is essential for some but for others it should be possible to find other ways to make many journeys.'
